The
Open Road: Touring America Today
Americans
take to the open road in droves every summer. They travel in campers,
RVs, trucks and buses. They are gone for a day, a week, or months.
But the one thing that these travelers have in common is the desire
to see the sights and experience the journey. And the most important
of all is to live to tell your friends about your adventures. The
best way to do this is to bring home souvenirs, to remind you and
all your friends that you were there-and wasn't it great? To answer
this call, souvenir penny machines dot the land, documenting our
need to proclaim our transience. Small, inexpensive, and portable,
the mementos produced are as American as apple pie and trailer parks.
So empty your pockets of change and squish away, because a penny
saved may be a penny earned, but it is not nearly as memorable as
a penny squished.
The
Open Road features 250 pennies and related materials from
tourists stops across the United States. These roadside momentos
all come from current roadside attractions, ranging from The Trees
of Mystery in Klamath, CA to Graceland in Memphis, TN. Included
are some great copper finds from zoos, towers, aquariums, shops,
big cities, small towns, and off-the-beaten-path places. Each
is unique, sharing an insight into the great American tradition
of tourist traveling.
