Moscow 1980 was a busy year in the US.
We bid farewell to John Lennon and the top of Mt. St. HelenŐs, and
welcomed Post-It Notes and CNN. But for many of our amateur athletes,
the summer was a quiet one. In response to the Soviet UnionŐs invasion
of Afganistan, the US decided not to send an Olympic delegation
to Moscow to compete in the 22nd Olympic Games. (Four years later,
Los Angeles hosted the Olympics. The USSR declined to participate
as a result of the 1980 US boycott.) The penny pictured, produced
by the very prolific elongated luminaire Frank Brazzell, features
the official emblem of the games: above the familiar Olympic rings
are 5 parallel lines in the shape of a pyramid, and a five pointed
star that mimicks the flag of the Kremlin.
